Many students coming to learn English in Malta choose the General English Course which aims to improve your competence in general English. The course provides systematic practice in the four main areas of language learning: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The first session concentrates on stabilising and improving present knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. The second session is fluency based with the objective of improving communication skills and helping students to gain confidence in spoken English. This course is ideal if you want plenty of free time to explore Malta and soak up the local culture.

Intensive English

Whether your aim is to learn a new language or to improve your English skills, this is the right course for you. Our Intensive English course will help you to build your confidence in the different language skills, listening, writing, reading and speaking so as to reach an understanding of native speakers and to be able to communicate with confidence and fluency. Intensive English is designed to give the student a solid foundation in the English language and is ideal for students who need to improve their fluency in a relatively short time. Students are encouraged to use the English language by means or role-play, group discussions and a variety of real life situation

General English Plus 1:1

This course is ideal for combining the experience of learning the language in a general English group whilst at the same time receiving individual classes. The general English classes in the morning encourage student interaction and help you improve your practical communication skills. Your one-to-one classes in the afternoon will allow you to work on areas you may feel need extra practice or which are of particular interest to you.

Mini Group

This mini group course is for students who are highly-motivated and looking to maximise their progress in a short time but still have time to enjoy Malta. Small group learning with a maximum of 6 students per class means more individual attention and increased opportunities for improving English fluency. By the end of the course, you will have improved your general English, increased your vocabulary and built your confidence.

Studying English in a mini-group intensive course means focusing on individual language skills in the morning and working on different aspects of the language such as improving the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as enhancing and increasing your active vocabulary and grammar knowledge. The afternoon session focuses on practicing and improving communication skills and fluency. The advantage of small group learning is that you get more individual attention from the teacher and more opportunity to practice your spoken English.

Mini Group Plus 1:1

Small group learning is an attractive option for extremely motivated students and the one-to-one lessons guarantee individual attention and a chance to focus on personal goals.

This is a highly intensive programme with 20 General English lessons per week in small groups in the mornings combined with a personal tuition programme of 10 lessons per week in the afternoons

Business English

Our Business English course is designed to meet the needs of students and professionals in the business field, such as finance, banking and administration. The programme consists of 20 lessons in a General English programme combined with 10 business English lessons in small groups.

Beginners

The Beginner English Course starts every first Monday of the month and is ideal for learners who have little or no knowledge of English. The course starts with basic conversation, reading and listening comprehension, building vocabulary, basic grammar and sentence structure. With a view to surviving in an English-speaking environment, it is designed to raise the beginner students’ confidence and encourage them to continue learning English.

Private Tuition

Our One-to-One course is ideal for you if you are seeking individual attention and personalised support to help you achieve your language goals whilst you learn English in Malta. Your private lessons will be tailor-made to suit your needs so you can advise us on the specific language areas and skills you would like to improve on and the appropriate tutor will be assigned to you. One-to-One lessons can also be combined with any of our other English courses. You may book from as few as 10 lessons per week up to 40 lessons per week.

Extended and Long Stay Programmes

The Extended & Long Stay Academic Programmes are ideal for those students learning English in Malta who want to improve their English to achieve real language fluency in order to study or work in an English speaking country. Our Extended and Long Stay Programmes consist of a course length of 8 weeks and 16 weeks respectively. Students can choose to enrol for a General English or Intensive English course.

All students on the Extended and Long Stay Programmes are given monthly progress tests and a written report from their teacher. Levels start from beginner english upwards.

All students on the Long Stay Programme can change to a Business English or Exam preparation course if they reach an intermediate level, depending on availability of these courses.

An Academic Year Programme is a tried and tested formula for quickly achieving fluency in English. A shorter version called an Academic Semester is also available for students who have less time available to spend abroad! Far more than a language course it’s ideal to gain the experience of a lifetime in an international community – perfect for ‘gap-year’ students coming to learn English in Malta.

Exam Preparation

Cambridge Exam Courses

  • Weeks: 8 (plus an additional week’s accommodation)

  • Levels: Intermediate for the FCE Exam, Upper intermediate for the CAE Exam and Advanced for the CPE

Key English Test (KET)
(CEF A2 – Pre-intermediate)

KET is the Cambridge ESOL’s exam which recognises the ability to deal with everyday written and spoken English at a basic level. KET is a truly international certificate, recognised by administrative, industrial, and service-based employers as a qualification in intermediate English. It is also accepted by many educational institutions for study purposes. Companies such as Epson, Nestlé, Motorola and KPMG all recognise the value of KET in their overseas offices.

Preliminary English Test (PET)
(CEF B1 – Intermediate)

PET is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an intermediate level. A PET certificate is valid for life. You will not need to take the exam again. It is truly an international certificate, recognised around the world for business and study purposes. Thousands of employers, universities and government departments officially recognise PET as an intermediate qualification in English. Although PET is a basic exam, it offers a chance to find out your strengths and weaknesses in using English, and gives you a pathway to higher qualifications such as the First Certificate in English (FCE).

Cambridge Exam Courses

  • • Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) (CEF C1 – Advanced)
  • • Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) (CEF C2 – Proficiency)

Our well-established and expert examination team provides the students with a comprehensive preparation for these examinations. The lessons are structured to focus on grammar and vocabulary building, with specific focus on the skills and knowledge needed for the examination. Students can expect to be given comprehensive practice of past papers and a thorough education in exam techniques. It should be noted that there is an expectation that the students have a certain degree of homework in order to prepare them fully for the exams.

IELTS Exam Course

  • Levels: Upper Intermediate
  • Start Dates: February 23, September 14 and October 12

This course is for students who are seeking to communicate effectively in everyday situations and gain a sound understanding of the principles of the English language. The students also study exam techniques and exam preparation in a course specifically designed to suit their individual needs. Students wishing to attend university or colleges of higher education in English speaking countries would be expected to have an IELTS qualification before being accepted on a course. For this reason this course will prove invaluable to their preparation for taking the exam. Students attend 30 lessons per week for 8 weeks prior to the examination. In some instances, it is necessary to book an extra week of accommodation due to the exam date

TOEFL Preparation Course

This course prepares students for the TOEFL internet-based test by presenting and practicing strategies to help improve the students’ reading, vocabulary, listening, speaking and writing skills. This course is beneficial for students who need a TOEFL score to get into a university in the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, that rely on TOEFL scores for admissions, scholarship and graduation decisions. Course start dates are available on request.

Pathway Programme

University Pathway Programme

Let our English school in Malta assist you to read for a Bachelor or a Masters degree at the University of Malta or St. Martins Institute of IT. You need to reach an Intermediate level of English to be accepted by first studying a General English programme followed by IELTS preparation.

University of Malta

Conscious of its public role, the University strives to create courses which are relevant and timely in response to the needs of the country. There are some 10,000 students including over 750 foreign/exchange students from nearly 80 different countries, following full-time or part-time degree and diploma courses many of them run on the modular or credit system. The University is geared towards the infrastructural and industrial needs of the country so as to provide expertise in crucial fields. Over 2,500 students graduate in various disciplines annually. The degree courses at the University are designed to produce highly qualified professionals, with experience of research, who will play key roles in industry, commerce and public affairs in general.

Applications for courses at the University of Malta starting in October 2010 will be accepted as from 1st October 2009. The deadline for applications for most courses will be 15th May 2010. The University has introduced an online application process which is now available at:

St Martins Institute of IT

St. Martin’s Institute of Information Technology is the primary provider of Information Systems, Computing and Business Education in Malta. The Institute was set up in 1985, and since then has been preparing students for competitive and public examinations in these subjects, based upon syllabi offered by renowned British and Maltese Universities.

The Institute, together with a number of similar institutions worldwide, provides tuition based upon the University of London and offers tuition support for degrees led by Goldsmiths and London School of Economics and Political Science, both Colleges of the University of London. Students have the unique opportunity to study and complete a university degree in Malta whilst being registered as an external student of the University of London.

Applications open on 1st November 2009 and close on 30th June 2010. Students are required to apply for the course with an application form, details of qualifications, as well as their IELTS result. The minimum entry requirement for diploma students is IELTS 5.0 or equivalent. Students who want to apply for degrees are required to have an IELTS score of 6.0 and a minimum level of 5.5 in each sub-test.

IELS also offers a variety of English plus Programmes. These courses are a combination of 20 lessons in the morning in international classes plus an exciting afternoon and evening activity programme specifically designed for our students.

Diving Courses

PADI Open Water Diver Duration: 4-5 Days This is the course you need before moving on to further training. Armed with your PADI Open Water Diver card, this certification is recognised at dive centres worldwide and you will learn to dive safely to a depth of 18m with a buddy.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Duration: 3 Days when booking the full Advanced Course with us, all 5 dives are taken over a 2-day period. This is a great choice if you’re looking to increase your capabilities and gain more experience in different underwater activities. To certify as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, you must take part in the Deep dive and Navigation dive.

Sailing

The school is run by sailors having over 20 years of teaching experience. They teach Dinghy Sailing, Windsurfing and Yachting starting from the very basic skills and progressing to higher levels. Everybody is welcome from complete novices to experienced sailors All lessons are in English and it is a great opportunity for students to learn additional terminology and be able to practice their English skills during the courses. Students are accompanied by an instructor for the duration of the course, with groups of not more than 5 students per instructor.

U-Photo Malta

Tour

Join us on one of our U-Photo adventures, as we visit secluded parts of the Island known only to the locals and take some of the best photos along the way. U-photo is the right tour for all who want to sight-see Malta in a relatively short time. The U-Photo Van is equipped with AC, photography magazines, a first aid box, soft drinks, music CDs, very comfortable seats and your host. The rest is up to you; but surely comfortable foot-wear, your camera, fully-charged batteries and sunscreen are always a good idea!

Photo Zone

The course is presented in an easy and fun way, including basic topics of main interest and understanding, in order to improve the quality of your photos by understanding all the features in your own camera making way for fun and artistically inspired photography. The course is spread over 3 days and will cover the natural skills in photography, basic techniques and fun tricks with individual attention and practicals to ensure full understanding of topics.

Our specially designed ‘Sun and Fun’ package has been put together to ensure that you make the most of the glorious sun whilst having fun here in Malta.

With a range of tours and activities including the Jeep Safari, our ‘Famous IELS Boat Party’, scuba diving, relaxing and adventurous boat rides to Gozo and Comino, trips to beaches, the Blue Grotto and great party nights, you are sure to leave Malta with not only a great tan, but great memories.
